We worked as a team and collated our ideas, which was extremely useful, as now we have a clear and distinctive view of which direction we wish to take with our opening sequence. Me, Danielle and Georgia discussed each of our initial ideas for the plot and began brainstorming these onto an A3 sheet. We looked at the plot of the entire film in order to come to a conclusion on our opening sequence, we wish to create a clear link between the two which is instigated in the first scene. Consequently, these ideas let us to investigate sub groups of ideas such as narrative, genre, mis-en-scene etc.
For example, we looked at costume and what types of costumes would be effective for our genre. We thought about scruffy, mud stained clothing in order for it to fit the theme of the film.
We looked at the ideology behind it and we came to the conclusion that it would be about a girl who moves into a new house that leads to her mind being possessed by demons. We thought that this would be an interesting concept and we could ensure that it was somewhat frightening for the audience therefore it would meet the criteria of the horror genre. We first looked at the different categories that fall under the horror genre. We discovered that we preferred the idea of a psychological horror rather than a slasher horror. I believe that a psychological horror could be adapted effectively in order for it to be a success.
The setting is extremely important for the success of the opening sequence as it sets the scene for the remainder of the film. A successful horror film consists of a dark and mysterious setting that provokes fear and a sense of the unknown that is evidently strongly feared. As a group, we came to the conclusion that it will be set in a house and a lot of the opening action will take place in the basement. Our opening sequence is going to be in the middle of the main event to create suspense and a sense of confusion for the audience as to what has led to these events. There will be flashbacks and flash forwards in order for the psychological aspect to be captured effectively.
During our discussion we looked at representations, specifically 'The Final Girl' idea. We decided that this is an important aspect in any horror film where the stereotypical blonde girl overcomes the villain and is essentially 'the last one standing'. However, we believe that we should take this idea and make it less stereotypical by potentially diverting away from the stereotypical image or gender in fact.
Narrative is extremely influential to the story as it leads the audience through the initial story in order for it to make sense and flow successfully. We decided hat we will use a non-linear narrative where the opening sequence begins within the action to make the audience intrigued and willing to find out what happened in the lead up to these events. We will use flashbacks and flash forwards also, in order to achieve this effect. Therefore, the continuation of the film links to the action and tells the story from the beginning, which will take the audience on a journey to the main event.
