Genre

Genre is an extremely important aspect of the success of a film. An audience knows exactly what they will get from a particular genre therefore, they're willing to take a chance on a film if it fits into the category of film they have a passion for. For example, if someone enjoys the horror genre then they will be willing to take a chance on a film they have little/no knowledge on as they know for a fact that they will find thrill and excitement within the film - a strong sense of adrenaline. Also, romantic comedies have a stereotypically female dominance that brings a happy, uplifting ending with a strong feel good factor. Genre groups films and makes an individual film recognisable amongst the wide variety of films that are out there. This ensures that they differentiate and show originality and flair.

The producer has a purpose within the text, and that is to gain an audiences response, therefore they use certain aspects of a media text in order to gain understanding from the audience or provoke an opinion.

The producer encodes an idea in order for the audience to essentially decode something from the film. The producer carefully picks out what they want the audience to get out of this media text and what reaction they wish to receive from it - based upon the genre category it falls into.

I am in a group with Georgia and Danielle, we looked at the different genre types and which ones would work effectively. I took the importance of genre into consideration when coming to a conclusion on what genre we would use for our film opening. After doing this I analysed which genre would work most effectively and how we could manipulate it to ensure it is original and it therefore differentiates from other films within the same genre. We decided to choose the horror genre as we feel as if it will be effective. This is because we believe horror films are extremely intriguing and they also immediately entice the audience and essentially 'hook them in' to ensure they're willing to watch on further and make a positive judgement of the media text. Horror films are thrilling and exciting which makes them interesting and appealing to the intended audience. I also think that we as a group could use filming, editing, lighting and audio etc effectively to make it effective and of a high quality.
